Hilda Smith celebrates 105th birthday
Bermuda’s oldest resident Hilda Marie Smith, affectionately known as ‘Aunt Hilda’ was as sharp as ever Sunday, when a 30-strong party of her real nieces and nephews, along with friends took her to lunch at Henry V111 Restaurant to celebrate her 105th birthday.Word spread among the scores of other diners at the about the age of this former school headteacher, and almost all of them, along with staff they just spontaneously cheered and joined in singing along with the family the traditional Happy Birthday song.Aunt Hilda signalled for a microphone and just as spontaneously, responded, repeatedly, to cheers, in her own rhythm: “I Thank You. I do.”Music is Aunt Hilda’s forte. Born and raised at Crawl Hill, Hamilton Parish on October 21,1907, she now is a resident at Packwood Home, Somerset where she spends her days doing what she can. From 7.30am to 8am routinely she plays the piano for devotions at the Home. She reads music and plays by ear; and responds without hesitation when called upon to play for church groups that regularly visit Packwood. After breakfast she reads to herself, especially her Bible, listens to the radio and watches TV. She loves biographies and history, the subject she was best in a school. She will for ever be remembered making the headlines for her pluckiness, at the piano on November 25, 2009 playing the National Anthem on the arrival of Queen Elizabeth II at Clocktower in the Dockyard.Hilda Marie was the only child of Edwin and Edna Smith. She was raised by her grandparents and her aunt Julia Furbert, who among other things encouraged her to play the piano. When she was about ten years old she completed the seventh grade and became a monitor at Temperance Hall School. She attended Berkeley Institute and later studied at a vocational school in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In Canada she learned how to play the harp and saxophone. Upon returning to Bermuda she taught kindergarten classes at Talbot School, being the only teacher and headteacher., gaining a reputation for never being absent during her 30 years at that school.During the next 35 years she taught at the newly opened Harrington Sound School, St. David’s Primary and Elliott Primary School. She retired at age 65.An anointed Christian lady, her advice to others is from Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not on thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path.”
