Farrington’s latest novel has real bite
Local author Rod Farrington has decided to take a walk on the wild side with his latest vampire themed novel called ‘Blood Fangs’.He believes this could be his biggest hit to date, after seeing how well it sold at a recent book signing event at a Barnes & Noble store in Shreveport, Louisiana.“I was under pressure to sell a lot of books because the store isn’t going to be interested if you don’t,” Mr Farrington said. “But they allowed me to sell all seven of my novels in that book signing and I had this book with the rest [in the end] it sold three to one.“It had really good sales that day. I was there with four other authors and I outsold them all.”He said he was “crossing his fingers” that Barnes & Noble would decide to stock this book, which is available on the store’s website. They also sell two of his other novels, ‘Holy Wars’ and ‘Phantom Marauders’.‘Blood Fangs’ is about a rare, unique strain of vampire-blood beasts that are from the Congo jungle. After a hurricane, they end up trapped in the Bermuda Triangle for hundreds of years.Within the triangle, disease doesn’t exist, so while the vampires can feed on other humans’ blood, they cannot infect people or breed other vampires. The tale takes a turn when adventurers known as Spinners venture into the Triangle to resolve the situation, however, the vampires end up escaping into Bermuda. You have to read the book to find out what happens next, the author said.Mr Farrington, the director at Gorhams, said he had never been ‘bitten’ by the vampire craze before. In fact he hadn’t even read a vampire novel, he told The Royal Gazette.“I have watched movies about vampires, but I really surprised myself when I got started. I had so much fun writing this one and I guess I like vampires now.“It was really interesting in fact my family and close friends have seen and read it and they are giving me a hard time and said this is my darkest novel.“Ironically they haven’t read the sequel and that is my dark novel,” he explained.Due to his excitement with the evolving plot in the first ‘Blood Fang’ novel, he has already completed the sequel. He had to stop himself from diving into a third book and is instead creating a prequel to the teenager’s Spinners series.Born in Louisiana, Mr Farrington felt led to explore his own imaginative side after watching the biopic ‘Finding Neverland’ about JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan.He will continue writing for as long as his imagination is working, he explained.‘Blood Fangs’ is what the author calls a “transitional novel” as he closes the chapter on the well known ‘Spinners’ series and starts the vampire themed books.“What I have done in this latest novel, the Spinners are part of it and over the years I had in my mind that the Spinners would always be in their teens, but I decided to allow them to grow up.“So this novel takes place ten years later and the Spinners are now in their late 20s.“I have been a father figure to the Spinners and have always protected them, but in this novel they are adults so they are on their own,” he said.Mr Farrington expects this book will appeal to both adults and his teenage fans, but insists it’s “not a Twilight type of vampire novel”.‘Blood Fangs’, $15, will be available on amazon.com, as well as at the Craft Market in Dockyard, AS Cooper, Gorhams, Bermuda Book Store and Brown and Co in Hamilton. He will also be on hand at a book signing at Gorhams on December 15.For more information on that and other local signings, like the Facebook page for RC Farrington.
