Creating scholarships for medical students

There are very few local scholarships for medical students; ironically, this field of study is one of the most expensive.Alisha Gabriel was a medical student two years ago when she formed the Bermuda Medical Students Society. Now doing her paediatric residency in Canada, she remains committed to helping local medical students.“I am hoping to set up a new scholarship fund for this upcoming school year 2013/2014. The scholarship will be called The Bermuda Medical Students' Scholarship,” she told Body & Soul.Dr Gabriel is calling on local physicians to follow the lead taken by Margot Harvey in creating the Robert and Margot Harvey Scholarship. Her aim is to have one scholarship composed of donations from various Bermudian physicians and awarded to one Bermudian medical student in any year of their studies.Dr Gabriel said: “The decision process for awarding the scholarship will be narrowed down by myself and then the top four applicants will be sent to all of the donors and they will vote for the most deserving candidate.”Interested physicians as well as the general public can contact Dr Gabriel by e-mail: bermudamedicalscholarships@gmail.com.
