Support for Primary Students affected by substance abuse
A seminar dedicated to the support of primary school students affected by drug and alcohol abuse takes place next month.PRIDE Bermuda’s STARS is designed to support children between the ages of seven and 11, who are affected by alcohol and drug abuse.Programme director Truell Landy was trained in the modality at the Betty Ford Institute in the US.“Through age-appropriate, fun and interactive activities, participants will learn to understand the disease of drug addiction, that it is not their fault and they will learn healthy self-care skills,” said Ms Landy.Added PRIDE’s executive director Judith Burgess: “There is a need for services to this particular group of children. Often, children affected by drug abuse are overlooked because they may have developed behaviours that help them to survive, such as acting out, perfectionism or avoidance.”The anti-drug charity ran a similar programme for middle school students last year.“The success of such a programme is based on knowledge and skills,’ said Ms Landy. “At the end of the programme the students shared what they had learned. One student shared: ‘I thought I was the only one who had to deal with addiction in the family. Now, I realise that I am not alone and that there is no such thing as a perfect family.”The five-day seminar runs April 1 through 5.Participants will work with Ms Landy as well as certified prevention specialists and trained group facilitators. The cost is $60. Fees must be paid by Friday. For more information telephone 295-9970 or 236- 2828
