Island’s newest school is open for business

Bermuda’s newest home school, the TLC Institute has had its grand opening at the First Church of God on Sound View Road, Somerset.Senior pastor of the church, Rev. Mrs. Deborah R. Evans explained the Institute is offering the GED (General Education Development) Program, consistent with the vision of the church, “that if we teach, there is opportunity to learn and expectation of change, hence the Institute’s short title: TLC.”The Sound View Church of God has served the Sandys community for more than 55 years, Pastor Evans noted, adding, “as we begin this new venture we will endeavour to provide an opportunity through TLC Institute to be a springboard for young people to their academic success and future by enrolling in our GED programme, recognised by the Bermuda College and international colleges and universities.”In words of dedication leading up to the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, Bishop Vernon G. Lambe, Sr. MBE, General Overseer of the Church of God also envisioned TLC Institute as a ‘second chance stepping stone,’ with similar expectation of reciprocation as reflected throughout history from the very Book of Genisis.TLC Board Member, Mrs. Judith Morgan Swan formally introduced the two-members of staff, Dr. Stanley E. Roberts and Ms. Joan Robinson, veteran educators who also have held various positions in the Sound View Church.Dr. Roberts has taught in the Bermuda public school system for 45 years, teaching Rural Science, Biology, Science, Civics and Spanish. His BSc. in Zoology was from Howard University; M.A., Webster University; Teaching Certification, Warwick University in the UK, and E.D. St. John’s University. He has received many honours and awards for his outstanding work as an educator.Ms. Robinson has taught in the Bermuda public school system for 23 years. Her M. Ed in Educatonal Leadership and Administration is from Miami University; B. Sc. from West Virginia University; and in a pradign shift to the nursing field, her certification was from Bermuda College and Harvard Graduate School.
