Using lasers to zap the fat

Dr Kyjuan Brown

Ever wish you could just lie down and magically have the fat cells in your body go away?Wish you could use the power of your mind and thoughts to simply pop them? Well it looks like science is almost there with a technique called laser lipo.“It’s the latest technology, “ said physician Kyjuan Brown, of Hope Healthcare, on Woodbourne Avenue, Pembroke. There’s no surgery involved. It works through something called bio-stimulation where only the fat cells are stimulated. This happens with a special laser, that punches holes into the fat cells and gets them to release their contents into the blood stream.According to Dr Brown only fat cells are affected in the procedure.“It selectively chooses fat cells and busts them open,” he said. “No muscle, bone or any other type of body tissue is affected.”The fat is absorbed into the bloodstream and will be re-deposited unless it gets used right away. For this reason those who have laser lipo done can’t simply roll over and sleep after the procedure. After all it’s not really magic.According to Dr Brown, every time someone has the procedure they must follow it with 20 minutes of mild to moderate cardiovascular exercise. In this way they are using the fat as fuel, burning it off before the body decides to re-deposit it.And how can you be sure your body will burn the fat from the fat cells you just had busted open and not get the fuel by some other internal biological means?“Your body will burn as energy whatever is easiest for it,” said Dr Brown. “If it’s already in the form that is easier to use, it will burn that before anything else.”If it sounds too science-fiction-like, Dr Brown points out that the success rate he’s seen with patients is 100 percent. “Ninety-five percent of the people who have had the procedure, saw a change instantly,” he said. “And the five percent who did not see a change instantly saw it after a few days.”He said clients lose between two and 12 inches in their abdominal region with the procedure.“It’s not all in one spot,” he noted. “We measure a centimetre down in each area, and measure what you lose in each zone. Typically there’s a two to three-inch loss in each zone.”The process is completed in 30 minutes.“We can do it on any area that you have fat,” said Dr Brown. “It’s 30 minutes for the abdominal area but removing a double chin may only take about 10 to 15 minutes. We measure you before and after the treatment and you see the differences.”According to Dr Brown the procedure is virtually pain-free. “Some patients complain of tingling and heat,” he said. “The level of heat we use varies. You don’t have to feel heat for the laser to work.”And he explained that the temperature never gets hot to the point where ice and/or cold packs are used, as some people may have experienced with other laser treatments. The treatment can only be used for relatively small amounts of fat, Dr Brown added.“We do have a medical weight loss programme for the morbidly obese,” he said.In that programme, clients can lose between 15lbs and 45lbs over 40 days. This is followed by a rest period and then the programme can be resumed for further weight loss. Dr Brown said when clients have completed the medical weight loss programme; they can opt to have laser lipo.“They can blast off a bit of the fat that’s left with the laser,” he said.Dr Brown continued: “It benefits everyone. The majority of our clients are athletic fitness buffs. They eat well, but they have love handles or cellulite that no amount of water consumption or exercise has been able to help. They come and have the treatment just to get rid of that problem bulge.”And because the results are instant in most cases, Dr Brown said he’s also had a lot of clients who simply want to look their best for a special occasion.“We have people who want to look good in their bikini tomorrow,” he said. And what’s the cost of the body to go with that $200 bikini? It depends on the area you are treating but prices range from $80 to $250.
