If you’re a reality television fan you might have spotted young starlet Kylie Jenner wearing a trendy piece of emoticon jewellery recently.

That necklace was created by Bermudian designer Alexandra Outerbridge, whose unique line has been gaining a following with models, singers and actresses in Los Angeles and beyond.

‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ star Gigi Hadid, actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, models Cara Delevingne and Georgia May Jagger, as well as new British singers like Jessie Ware and Ellie Goulding have all been spotted wearing pieces from the Outerbridge Jewelry line.

Ms Outerbridge told The Royal Gazette that the recent success felt “amazing”. “It gives me the encouragement to keep pushing the brand forward and keep growing it. It has been a really great response.”

Her jewellery found itself into the hands of some of the rich and famous through connections she’s made in the US.

After meeting Rob Kardashian (from reality show ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’), Ms Outerbridge was overjoyed to learn he liked some of her pieces and wanted to pass them on to his famous sisters.

The 29-year-old said: “His mom really liked my stuff and she passed it on to his sister Kylie [Jenner] who just started wearing it, so that caused a little Kardashian following I guess.

“Kylie is known for her style. She is definitely someone in the genre that my jewellery is geared towards so she’s the perfect person to have worn it in my eyes. She has been wearing the line since last April.”

Ms Outerbridge also had the opportunity to have her jewellery featured in Calvin Harris’ popular video for ‘I Need Your Love’ with Ellie Goulding.

“In the video she is wearing all Outerbridge Jewellry,” the designer said.

“I happened to be in Miami at the time and [the singer’s] suitcase with all her clothing and jewellery got lost during her flight from London. Her stylist was a friend of mine and asked me to put my jewellery on her,” she explained.

Ms Outerbridge, the daughter of Hamilton mayor Graeme Outerbridge, decided to start her own jewellery line inspired by the youth culture in Los Angeles in the summer of 2012.

Since then she has been able to garner success thanks to help from people, like Bermudian Shiona Turini, fashion market director at Cosmopolitan Magazine, who believed in her brand.

Instagram proved to be another great tool in spreading the word about her jewellery line. Whenever a celebrity would snap a photo of themselves wearing one of her pieces and tag the picture, it would become accessible to thousands of followers.

She said social media sites were changing the way people learn what’s in style.

“You don’t have to go into a store to see what’s trending any more because there is such a big eCommerce shopping culture now. These days people have access to new products while sitting at their desks just by scrolling through their timeline and seeing new things and new styles.”

In the next few weeks Ms Outerbridge will be releasing her latest jewellery line featuring geometric shapes. It is described as “classic, with an edgy punk feel” and is expected to appeal to a wide cross section of people seeing the pieces are affordable and contemporary.

Although it hasn’t been an entirely smooth ride since starting the jewellery line — such as the cost of producing the designs entirely in the US — the designer said it was “100 percent worth the effort”.

“The best part is when you get messages or e-mails from customers with pictures of themselves wearing the jewellery,” she said.

“They might say how happy they are with the pieces and how much they love it. It’s also great seeing people on the street wearing something you made.

“To see an idea from a sketch come to life and seeing someone out there as a customer wearing it is very rewarding.”

Her ultimate goal is to see the line sold in luxury department stores like Barneys’ and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Until then she just wants to keep making pieces that are true to the brand, that people enjoy which she can believe in.

Ms Outerbridge’s new Geometric Collection 2014 will be available next month at Lovit Boutique, located on Queen Street, Hamilton.
