Olympic heartbreak for Phillips

Ineligible: Sullivan Phillips

Sullivan Phillips Olympic dream lies in tatters after being told he is ineligible to represent Great Britain men’s team in London next month. The withdrawal of the uncapped Phillips has left Great Britain officials red-faced after it was discovered he couldn’t be called up, having played a senior game for the Bermuda national team.Phillips was hoping to win a spot in the Great Britain squad after being named in their provisional 21-man squad last month, along with NBA stars Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls), Ben Gordon (Detroit Pistons) and Byron Mullens (Charlotte Bobcats). He was due to head to Houston Rockets’ training base later this week where the roster will be cut to 12 players.British Basketball’s performance director Chris Spice said: “After submitting the paperwork to FIBA, we found out (Phillips) played in a senior game for Bermuda.”Phillips recently won the Slovakian Men’s National Basketball League Championships with his team Prievidza. He told The Royal Gazette in a recent interview he was confident of making the final roster.“I’m definitely confident of making the team, I won’t be there to make up numbers I’ll be there to make the Olympic team to represent GB,” he said.“My faith in God and belief my work ethic is high and I’ll go and do my best and if it’s in his will I’ll be in London, that’s how I see it.”Great Britain will be forced to call up reinforcements to their squad having also lost the services of San Antonio Spurs’ Ryan Richards.Richards stunned GB officials this weekend after declaring his intention to turn out for Jamaica instead at the Olympics. However, his intended switch has come under scrutiny by the world governing body. The Kent-born forward, who won seven senior caps last year, is understood to have informed British Basketball by officials of his decision by e-mail.“Clearly Ryan is a talented athlete,” said British Basketball’s performance director Chris Spice. “He’s been with both Great Britain and England for quite some time. We’re disappointed that he’s made that decision. But we have to move on.”Meanwhile, Bermuda’s Jenaya Wade-Fray was in action for Great Britain’s women’s team at the weekend, who split their international series 1-1 after losing 63-50 to Canada in Edinburgh yesterday.Despite a game-high 14 points apiece from Jo Leedham and Natalie Stafford, the Canadians delivered a decisive late surge to gain revenge for Saturday’s 70-57 defeat.
