Long jumper King handed Olympic wildcard
Arantxa King will join fellow long jumper Tyrone Smith in London after receiving a wildcard to compete in the Olympic Games.King has come agonisingly close to meeting the standard in the long jump, her preferred event, although she will continue to try and qualify outright.Her best jump this season saw her leap 6.55 metres just .1 metres off the standard required to book a ticket to London 2012.Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, confirmed yesterday that King had been granted a wildcard berth.“I am pleased to announce that Arantxa King has been accepted into the London Olympics as an unqualified athlete in the long jump,” said Watson.“We had to submit a form with the deadline last Friday and she has been accepted.“We are very excited and so is Arantxa and her mother, Branwen Smith-King as we sent it to them this morning.”King be striving to meet the standard when she competes with Bermuda Olympic hopefuls Tre Houston and Aaron Evans to the Trinidad National Championships this weekend.Watson also revealed young athlete Kerri Furbert had signed a letter of intent to attend the Univeristy of Missouri on an athletic scholarship.Furbert was selected to represent Bermuda in the long jump at the recent Carifta Games where she finished fifth in the Under-20 girls’ final.The Warwick Academy graduate was introduced to the idea of attending the University of Missouri by her coach Brian Wellman.Wellman, arguably Bermuda greatest ever track and field athlete, has a close working relationship with the university’s sprint and jumps coach, Kareem Streete-Thompson.“The BTFA wishes Kerri every success in her future as she continues to develop her track and field skills and fulfill her educational ambitions,” added Watson .The Tigers have recently joined the South East Conference (SEC) and will be competing against top universities such as Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.Last week saw Bermuda triple jumper Akeila Richardson agree to attend Kennesaw State University (KSU) on an athletic scholarship.
