Franklin wins Bermuda showdown
Overseas professional Micah Franklin won the showdown between two of the Island’s top squash players when he stopped Bermuda Squash Racquets Association director Patrick Foster 3-0 in the third round.“The men’s draw is incredibly tough with former world top ten players, but Nick Kyme, Micah Franklin and I have all been training hard and feel each of us are good enough to push for a top three finish,” Foster told the Royal Gazette a few days ago.“Unfortunately Micah and I are seeded to meet in the quarter-finals so only one of us is going to go through, so no predictions from me on that one.”Franklin’s win sets up a fourth-round meeting with Adam Bews of Orkley on Monday. He is the only Bermudian male still left in the draw after Kyme also lost, going down 3-0 to Anthony Brindle of Gibraltar.Meanwhile, one local female is through to the third round, with Laura Robinson beating Susie Lacey in a close all-Bermuda second round tie 3-2.Robinson now meets Joan Smith of Shetland Islands. Also losing yesterday was Rachel Barnes of Bermuda who went down 3-0 to top seed and the 2011 gold medal winner Sarah Taylor.
