Teens take Bermuda into tennis finals

Bermuda are through to the women's team final in tennis after straight set wins for teenager Tyler Smith and Erika Bove in the singles. However, the men's team suffered ‘midnight misery’ after a long day on the court ended in a 2-1 defeat as Gavin Manders and Jensen Bascome lost to Scott Clayton and James Connelly 6-3, 7-5 from Jersey. The match-deciding doubles did not begin until 9.30 last night when Manders and Bascome took on Clayton and Connelly, hoping to book a spot in the 9am final.Earlier in the day Manders lost a tense match on 'centre court' 6-4, 6-4 to Jersey's number one player Clayton. But David Thomas kept Bermuda men's final hopes alive with a hard fought 7-5, 7-5 win over Connelly, a match that was delayed for an hour.Thomas led 5-4 in the first set, and the match did not finish until 9pm with Thomas bringing home the all-important win by breaking his opponent’s serve in the deciding game to take the set and the match and force the team match into the doubles.“I think Gavin played a good match, I had had never seen him play before and didn’t know what to expect,” said Clayton, 19, after his win. “He played solidly and didn’t miss much and was always fighting which I like. The home crowd was great for him and I enjoyed it as well. It was a great atmosphere.”Manders led 3-2 in both sets but Clayton rallied to take the lead 5-4 in the first set as he broke Manders and served for the set. In the second set Manders again led a 3-2 lead slip before going 4-3 up on serve before Clayton tied it at 4-4. A great rally led Clayton’s fightback as he broke Manders’ serve to go up 5-4 and then served for the match.“I remember the rally, it was 4-all and love-30 and when you are serving at 4-all it is very tough and if you get broken then that is pretty much the set,’ said Clayton, who has been on the Island for a week staying with a local family.“The standard here is pretty good and there are a lot of good players. I’m loving Bermuda and I’m staying with a good friend of mine. They have been so hospitable to me and James.”Jersey called on Clayton and Connelly to pull them through in the doubles and they won the first set 6-3 before Bermuda, with a vocal crowd still behind them as midnight approached, battled hard to turn it around in the second set which ws a see-saw battle, and tense battle as early in the second set the umpire summonsed the match referee onto the court after a heated exchange between Bermuda coach Ricky Mallory and the Jersey players. It seemed to fire up the Bermuda pair and the crowd, too, as the set remained close before Jersey finally broke Bermuda’s serve to go up 6-5 and then served to close out the match at 11.40pm. Now the Jersey players will have to do it all over again Monday morning against a more rested Guernsey team in the final. The women, by comparison, had an easier time of it against Guernsey as Smith comfortably beat Danielle Whitfield 6-1, 6-0 while Bove won a match of two lefties, 6-1, 6-4 against Georgina Denton. The women will play Menorca in the final today at 3pm after Menorca beat Isle of Man 2-1 in their semi final.“Yes, it is very satisfying and my mind is leaning towards the final match and winning the gold,” said coach Jerome Bradshaw who stayed up late last night to watch the men’s double match. “I feel pretty confident about our abilities in the singles and I don’t want to have it come down to the doubles, if we can get through the two singles.“Tyler tends to start slowly but once she gets the first couple of games under her belt she just rolls and has some nice, solid ground strokes.”After yesterday’s exciting men’s matches, Bradshaw is urging Bermudians to come out again today to support the women as they battle for the gold medal.
