Footballers claim double victory

Bermuda 1 Greenland 0Bermuda picked up a second gold medal in the football tournament when midfielder Drewonde Bascome netted an 88th minute penalty to separate the two teams at the National Sports Centre.The game was heading towards a second penalty shoot-out on the night when the referee spotted a shove on the back of Domico Coddington inside the Greenland penalty following a long ball into the box from a throw-in.Bascome stepped up to take the kick and placed his effort past the keeper to break the deadlock.Both teams picked up the tempo late in the game in search of a winner as sub Rai Simons, who had just come on to replace Antwan Russell, almost won the match for Bermuda in the 75th minute when he rounded the keeper but shot against the near post from a sharp angle.Russell went close himself early in the second half when a goalkeeping error presented him with a chance but he chipped the ball wide of an open goal.Both teams struggled to find the decisive touch in front of goal, as a smart Bermuda move saw Coddington send Russell into the box but his cross inside the six yard box went untouched across goal.Finally Bascome came up with the decisive goal as the men made it a winning night for local football in front of a large crowd.Bermuda 0 Greenland 0 (aet)(Bermuda won 5-4 on penalties)Goalkeeper Stacy Babb was the hero as the women’s team beat Greenland in sudden death penalty kicks.Neither team could produce a goal from open play in 120 minutes, and even the kicks started with a miss when Tcshana Wade blasted the first Bermuda kick over the crossbar. Greenland scored their first three kicks while Jessica Furtado and Cheyra Bell netted for Bermuda.Shuntae Todd, who came on as a sub late in the regulation period, then scored the fourth kick before Babb made a timely save to her right to erase the Greenland advantage. Jenay Edness and Naqaaraq Lyberth then netted to leave the scores tied at 4-4 after five kicks.In sudden death Aaliyah Nolan scored Bermuda’s first kick before Babb turned hero again when she saved captain Tobiassine Abelsen’s spot-kick to spark scenes of celebration among the Bermuda players.
