A wild morning at the Senior Game

The Junior Open pairs is at the halfway stage with the first session being held on the fifth and the second scheduled for the coming Tuesday .Leading with a great 64.29 percent game are Linda Abend- Noula Contibas, with David Petty-Kathleen Keane on 59.23 percent in second followed by Geoff and Kath Bell on 56.85 percent and Pat and Barbara Cerra on 55.95 percent. Full results next week.Last Monday morning at the Bridge Club saw the staging of a Senior Game and from all accounts the hands throughout the morning were really wild …that should have been a clue to the South players on Board 24!Before I get to the hand, however, let me bring you the results of the Senior Game as two Strata B pairs finished on top of the field in A and B …winning were Elysa Burland and Greta Marshall, with Lorna Anderson and Margaret Kirk in second ahead of Magda Farag Sheena Rayner in third and Alan Douglas Bill Tucker in fourth.Finishing third in B were Russell and Dee Craft.Well done to Elysa, Greta, Lorna and Margaret for an excellent result in a good field. Now to Board 24 ..Board 24. Love All. Dealer West.A1086210AJ52A108Q94 KJ75QJ876 AK952K NoneQJ65 K942343Q1098764373A wild deal which should see North open 1, with most Easts overcalling 2.South has to pass ( doesn’t he?) and West will raise to 4. Some North’s might stretch to a takeout double at this stage but a number of Souths will balance with 5whether or not North takes another bid. There will have been a number of East-West pairs stealing the hand in 4which will only be beaten if the defence takes their spade ruffs….the defence should find it but if Declarer throws the spade King under the Ace at trick one it may get North thinking!Even if North does return a spade for South to ruff which spade does he return?A high one asking for a diamond return for the second ruff or a low one asking for a club?Without South bidding he will probably ask for a diamond and then the second spade ruff never happens! Interesting!Look what happens, however, if South takes the 5 bid…it probably goes around to East who might bid 5 which will go Pass-Pass- ? ... if north now takes the 6’sacrifice’ good things happen! The contract is cold as declarer can actually ruff out the spades and set up the fifth spade for a club discard …a cold slam on a combined point count of 15! Isn’t it just a great game!
