Bermuda fall short in run chase

Bermuda?s cricketers lost their sole uninterrupted practice match in Trinidad yesterday, going down by 48 runs to Wanderers Cricket Club.

The squad were due to play five matches during their ten-day training camp in the Caribbean, but because of the heavy rain that has fallen throughout their time there, play has only been possible on two occasions so far.

Skipper Irving Romaine lost the toss yesterday morning and was invited to field first by Wanderers, with the local club side quickly taking advantage of that decision by reaching 200 for the loss of only one wicket in the 36th over.

However, excellent bowling from spinners Dwayne Leverock (three for 46) and Delyone Borden, as well as a couple of well-executed run outs helped to peg the Trinidadians back in the latter stages of their innings.

While the Wanderers score of 244 all out could have been far bigger ? with the club having looked at one stage is if they would finish up with something in excess of 300 ? it was still an imposing total to chase.

Bermuda?s reply began respectably, with opener Clay Smith (37) and number three David Hemp (35) helping them reach 64 for one in the 16th over.

But once they were out, the innings lost momentum and despite a couple of useful contributions down the order from Janeiro Tucker (28), OJ Pitcher (30) and Lionel Cann (30), they were always some way off the required run rate.

Bermuda?s last three batsman were all dismissed for a duck as the team crashed to 196 all out.
