Police engaged with more than 1,100 motorists during the latest series of road sobriety checkpoints, but only one rider was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

A police spokesman said that between November 24 and November 27, police stopped 1,135 motorists at a variety of locations around the island, of whom 14 were required to go through a field sobriety test.

He said: “Six of the 14 motorists were then required to take an alco-analyser test, which one motorist failed.

“As a result, that individual was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and a court appearance is anticipated in due course.”

The spokesman said that the checkpoints resulted in ten other arrests for non-traffic matters including outstanding warrants and drug offences, while six received written warnings for traffic infractions.

Police also issued 23 traffic tickets, including five for unlicensed vehicles, five for uninsured vehicles, four for driving without a licence, two for licence plate offences and one for driving while disqualified.

“As we enter the festive season, the Bermuda Police Service takes this opportunity to remind road users to be responsible,” the spokesman said.

“Residents are encouraged to make arrangements with a designated driver, taxi or another reputable transportation service to get home, or to their intended destination, safely, if going out to socialise.

“Don’t ride or drive impaired. Stop speeding, and please be mindful of others on our roads.”
