BUEI's Island SOS series begins with talk by Falkland Islander
The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute begins its new Island SOS series with a talk by Paul Brickle, a Falkland Islander.
In “Pioneering Environmental Stewardship”, Dr Brickle will discuss the work of his company, South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute.
SAERI teaches students and helps build relationships between several South Atlantic Overseas Territories in three categories: Ecosystems, Earth Science and Remote Sensing and Data.
Each Island SOS talk will highlight one island or island group, like Montserrat or the Azores, and explore environmental topics like geospatial planning and citizen-driven marine protection.
BUEI hopes the talks will “highlight innovative ocean development initiatives from islands around the world”.
Like Bermuda, the Falkland Islands are a self-governing overseas territory of Britain, but they only have about 3,000 people.
Located in the southern hemisphere, the collection of islands is home to a wide assortment of wildlife and is situated in currents that impact weather around the globe.
Dr Brickle’s talk will take place on Saturday, September 3, at 3pm. For each talk, the overseas guests will present online to the live audience in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium.
For members, tickets are $10 and for non-members $15, while students can attend free with a valid ID.
Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the Oceans Gift Shop on 294-0204.
