The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers is holding a lunch forum to mark its 30th anniversary.

It will be held on September 26 at Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, with proceeds supporting the Bermuda College Foundation.

At the event David Burt, the Premier, will speak on co-operation between government and industry. Mike Yaworsky, Florida Insurance Commissioner, will discuss the “The Bermuda-Florida Partnership” and Hannah Gurga, CEO of the Association of British Insurers will speak on “The Bermuda-UK Industry Partnership”.

Justin O’Keefe, chief underwriting officer of RenaissanceRe and chair of the Reinsurance Association of America, will speak on the “The Bermuda-US Industry Partnership”.

In addition, a panel discussion will be held on the subject of partnerships and the future of them.

“We are pleased that Premier Burt and our international industry speakers have agreed to join us to celebrate those partnerships which continue to underpin Bermuda’s status as the world’s risk capital”, said Pina Albo, chair of Abir.

The event will be held in the Princess Ballroom of the hotel, and doors will open at noon. The programme will begin at 12:30.

A $50 donation will be requested for each attendee.

For three years, Abir, St John’s University, New York, and Bermuda College have been supporting a course on insurance and reinsurance in Bermuda.

“Nearly 70 per cent of Abir members’ Bermuda-based employees are Bermudians, spouses of Bermudians or Permanent Resident’s Certificate holders. Bermudians have played an integral part in the growth and success of the industry,” said John Huff, president and chief executive of Abir.

“Our partnership with Bermuda College reflects Abir’s commitment to further strengthen our pipeline of local talent.

“We are proud to support Bermuda College and the education of the Bermudian leaders of the future,” he added.

Abir was established after a number of new reinsurers incorporated in Bermuda in 1993 following Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm that led to a shortage of capacity in the market.
