Kendra Earls' mosaics are what mostly caught my attention
Stylistically, Kendra Earls is a cubist, albeit, her techniques are varied.Since I last reviewed her 2009 Masterworks Museum exhibition, she has added to her techniques, the making of mosaics. An exhibit of her work is now on at Common Ground. Although she is showing some of her cubist paintings, the work that captured my attention the most was her mosaics. As you enter Common Ground Cafe, on the left is a mosaic, mostly in grey but with a smidgen of red. This I consider to be the best in the show. It is also the most abstract. It is called ‘Finding My Way'.Because Ms Earls' art is cubist, it is therefore an abstraction of whatever she depicts. In many instances, the subject matter is grounded in a still-life. Characteristically, her work is very colourful. As for her mosaic art, Ms Earls is largely self-taught although much of what she knows about this art she obtained from reading books on the subject.Ms Earls hails from Atlanta, Georgia, where she studied art at the Atlanta College of Art. The ACA is located at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, which is the leading art museum in the Southeastern United States. The museum has a substantial collection of modernist art, which Ms Earls was able to study and imbibe as an art student in this world-class institution. The museum itself was designed by the post-modernist architect Richard Meier with an addition by Renzo Piano.Ms Earls has lived in Bermuda for the last seven years,Ms Earls exhibition ends today. Anyone wishing to see it, should hurry over to Common Ground in Chancery Lane, Hamilton.
