Making da Starting 11

Starters: The album cover

Shane ‘Bermuda' Woodley cheers for the home team with a new compilation album of Bermuda musical talent. The new album, to be released on Tuesday, is called ‘Da Squad Starting Eleven'. It features artists, producers and writers that represent the “best of the best” in Bermuda's music industry.Mr Woodley hand-selected only eleven artists to form Da Squad, Bermuda's musical national team. Comparable to the Bermuda's favourite sport football, each position on the album (striker, midfielder, goalkeeper) has been filled by an artist whose songs bring strength to the team. The concept was the brainchild of executive producer Mr Woodley whose previous professional experience in the music industry spans beyond Bermuda. Mr Woodley has worked alongside artists such as Jay-Z, Freeway, Memphis Bleek, Beyonce and Rhianna. After working with Jay-Z on several albums, Mr Woodley relocated to Atlanta to work with artist and song writer, Ne-Yo.“His return to Bermuda has inspired him to bring his level of expertise to the local music industry raising the professionalism of local music and awareness of our Island's untapped talent,” said co-producer DeShae DeShields. “In the summer of 2010, he put the challenge out to all local artists, new and old, to see who would make Da Squad.”The Da Squad 2011 teams includes singer Troy Anthony and such upcoming stars as 15-year-old Jelani and 17-year-old Yung Mac.“They proved they deserve their space on the team,” said Ms DeShields.Others on the album include: Kombat, KD da Beast, Fyah B, E-Levels, Candace Furbert, BLAC and Big Snipes. The album is a mix of reggae, hip hop, rap, dancehall, R&B and gospel. The album's first single, ‘Mi A Pray', by Cheetah was released in November 2010. It has been receiving regular radio time on local stations and praise from overseas including shout outs from Jamaican radio personality ZJ Liquid of Zip.fm.Many others in the local music and entertainment industry have pulled together to support the album. Comedians Nadanjah and Jah of 2 Fools perform humorous interludes as Premier League expert commentators announcing the players.Chewstick has offered to partner with Mr Woodley to provide an opportunity for audiences to see Da Squad perform at their new space on Court Street. Dunn Deal Entertainment will be hosting a special Thirsty Thursday featuring the entertainers at Captain's Lounge.Shine Hayward will be hosting an album release party on Saturday at Shine's House of Music starting at 10pm.
