Creative people head for island retreat

An overnight retreat for creative people will take place at Paget Island this weekend.Organisers the Chewstick Foundation are behind the event.Chewstick executive director Gavin Smith said its purpose was “to isolate creatives in an intense, artistic and spiritual environment that encourages personal growth and collaboration”.Chewstick is targeting to have roughly 30 participants, all aged 18 and above.Workshops will be offered by singer Joy T. Barnum and artist April Branco. Mr Smith will hold a workshop on strategic thinking and marketing; Richard Bassett will teach songwriting; Carly Lodge creative writing; Haile Maryam Afrikan Science; Chris Astwood poetry; Deidra-Lee Bean capoeira.“We are asking that everyone who attends bring a passion they are willing to share, even if their passion is learning,” said Mr Smith.He noted that too often, creative people are caught in the hustle and bustle of daily living and are not able to give their entire attention to their craft.“The retreat provides a safe space,” he said.“Chewstick is encouraging participants to unplug from their cell phones and the worries of daily living and enjoy the reclusive experience of a totally creative weekend disconnected from the regular stresses of their lives.”The retreat costs $65 which includes transport to and from Paget Island, dinner, breakfast, housing, an introductory workshop, two creative breakouts, a bocce tournament, acoustic fireside open-mic jam session and plenty of vibes!For more information and registration visit www.chewstick.org or ring 292-2439.
