Menuhin Foundation celebrates 35th anniversary

The Menuhin Foundation celebrated its 35th anniversary in Bermuda this weekend with two sold-out events.A gala dinner on Friday night honoured two of the foundation's stalwarts.John Campbell and Kate Stubbs were named trustees emeritus the highest award the foundation can give. Mr Campbell served as Foundation chairman between 1976 and 2006; Kate Stubbs served as a trustee from 1980 to 2005.The weekend also presented the foundation with an opportunity to thank its supporters with a night of great music. The female string quartet BOND performed at the Fairmont Southampton on Friday and Saturday nights. The group, which has played all over the globe, consists of Tania Davis on violin; Eos Chater on violin; Elspeth Hanson on five-string violin/viola; and Gay-Yee Westerhoff on cello.Lord Yehudi Menuhin visited Bermuda in 1976 where he heard a string group perform at Warwick Academy. Out of that grew his idea to establish an organisation in Bermuda that would then provide instruction in stringed instruments to the Island's school children. The goal of the Menuhin Foundation remains the same to foster an interest in classical and other music, recruit teachers, and organise and produce programmes and concerts and other forms of entertainment and musical education. There are almost 400 students who participate in the various Menuhin programmes today. For information e-mail info@menuhin.bm
