Catherine Zeta-Jones treated for bipolar disorder

Hollywood star and Bermuda resident Catherine Zeta-Jones was recently treated for bipolar disorder as a result of the stress she endured during her husband’s battle with cancer.Ms Zeta-Jones, who is married to Bermudian Michael Douglas, was by her husband’s side for much of last year as he had aggressive radiation and chemotherapy treatment for stage four throat cancer. In January, he announced his tumour was gone. Ms Zeta-Jones, who won an Oscar for her role in ‘Chicago’, later checked into a US mental facility to be treated for bipolar II disorder. International media have reported the 41-year-old spent five days at the Connecticut facility. The actress’ spokeswoman said: “After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check into a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder.“She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.”Bipolar disorder used to be known as manic-depressive illness. It can cause unusual shifts in mood and energy in those who have it. Some people experience manic episodes, which result in a period where they are overly joyful, or periods of deep depression.Ms Zeta-Jones’ condition is not as severe as bipolar I. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar II usually results in less intense depressive episodes.Mr Douglas’ illness was not the only stress in their lives. His son from a previous marriage, Cameron, was jailed last year on drug charges. Mr Douglas’ ex-wife Diandra Douglas is also suing him. Ms Douglas received $51 million when the couple divorced in 2000.The couple’s multimillion-dollar divorce deal also gave her a share of proceeds from projects related to work the actor did when they were married. Her lawyers say the deal entitles her to some of the proceeds from ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ which came out last year. In the film Mr Douglas reprises his Oscar-winning role from the 1987 Oliver Stone ‘Wall Street’ film. His lawyers say Ms Douglas is not entitled to any money from the film, which has grossed more than $100 million, because it was not on the horizon when they split. She recently told US Harper’s Bazaar magazine that she did not know her husband was sick when she filed legal papers regarding the second ‘Wall Street’ film. She added that she lost a lot of her divorce settlement in the infamous Maddof ponzi scheme.
