‘I grow with every piece I paint’

Always a story to tell: Bermuda Hogfish by Michael Cacy

Michael Cacy has always made a career out of art. He’s held the titles of art director and graphic designer; he’s played guitar in a rock band and has even written a few songs of his own.His most public piece of art isn’t recognisable as his at all it’s his art that’s seen on every bottle of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum.His focus shifted to fine art seven years ago. Most of his work now ends up in galleries and private homes as opposed to being seen in print.‘New Works’, an exhibit of art by Mr Cacy, opens in the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard on Sunday.“I enjoy anything creative. I make art, because that’s what I know and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Creatively, every new painting brings its own challenges and rewards. I grow with every single piece I paint.“Producing gallery art is not much different than producing illustration art in traditional media, though these days most illustration is created electronically. I prefer slinging paint, myself. As a fine artist, I really enjoy being able to paint in oils as well as water-based media.”Bermuda’s light and shadow are huge influences in his works.“I almost always gravitate to sunlit subjects in my paintings,” he said. “The Island’s flora, architecture, water and people keep me inspired daily. There is always a story to be told. Historical themes here always fascinate and inspire me, and I’ve painted a number of paintings on Bermuda’s unique history.”A sailing trip on board the Spirit of Bermuda inspired Mr Cacy to create two watercolours.“I crewed on the inaugural overseas voyage to Charleston. [It was] an incredible experience the crew, the flying fish, the sounds of the rigging at night, storms, and all that gorgeous hardware of the ship.“I painted one watercolour on board and started another that I finished later. When the captain discovered that I was handy with brushes, I had to put the art supplies away. For the rest of the voyage, he had me varnishing the entire cockpit and any other surface he could find. I am really inspired by our beautiful Bermuda sloop, and have done several subsequent paintings of her.”Music is also an inspiration.“As mentioned, I used to make my living at music. And I am [reggae singer] Collie Buddz’ stepdad. I often play his tunes while I’m working. The music is great, and his writing has a good deal of substance, as anyone who has listened to it already is aware. He’s a very astute songwriter.”He loves the idea of being his own boss, he said.“I enjoy making a mess of my studio and then I love it on those rare occasions when it’s clean again, and I like the feeling of seeing a painting through to a successful ending. There’s a genuine deep satisfaction in producing a solid painting.”His dream project is always his next painting.“I believe any artist gets better with every piece of art he creates.”‘New Works’ opens Sunday at 5pm. The exhibit runs through June 1.
