Choosing Destiny over Doom Album ‘speaks of hope for our community’

Danica "U-Neek" Burrows

‘Forget yesterday, today is your day of destiny’, is the message behind a new spoken word album released by a local minister who wants to inspire the community to hope.Danica (U-Neek) Burrows, Minister of Conservation at the First Church of God on the North Shore in Pembroke, has released a CD project called ‘Mariposa: It’s A New Day’. On the album she speaks words of inspiration set to music arranged by her husband, sound engineer, Jason Burrows.“It is an album that speaks of hope for our community given the downturn in the economy and the community unrest over the last year,” said Mrs Burrows. “The CD project is called ‘Mariposa’ which is Spanish for ‘butterfly’ but it is also entitled ‘it’s a new day’ and talks about the concept of coming from a sense of gloom and doom and entering into a new day, which is a day of destiny. It came out of a sense of creativity and a desire to see other people rise above their own sense of demise.”Mrs Burrows is a minister by profession and believes that speaking is her gift. She made the album because she wanted to reach an audience outside the walls of the church. She seems herself as a professional “encourager”.“It does stem from my own personal experiences of feeling very low,” she said. “It came out of a devotion period I was having one day with my Bible. I was just writing. My husband came home one afternoon and I shared with him what I had written. He encouraged me to come into the studio and pose it to music. Little did we know it would come out like this. I would say the whole sense behind the project is to give the community a sense of uplift, especially those who are on the path of looking for truth or a sense of hope.”The album is currently selling at the Heritage Worship Centre Bookstore, the First Church of God Bookstore, Dub City Records and it is also on iTunes.com. She has so far had a positive response from her listeners.“I have had persons saying that the lyrics are very encouraging and uplifting,” she said. “Putting this out there is an emotional risk for me. I know that not everyone is spiritual or Christian. Everyone has their own spiritual path, per se. I ultimately believe that God is the answer. That is my contribution coming from my own sense of spirituality.”Examples of some lyrics include: “As I pondered the thought of day, I am struck with the realisation that this day in which we now stand stems from yesterday. Yesterday represents the day of doom. Now we have entered a new day and it represents a day of destiny.”The lyrics go on to give examples of what a day of destiny might look like. At the end of the album there is an appeal asking young people to choose to live in a life of destiny rather than doom.“My ultimate desire is to serve people and to serve God,” she said. “That is my heart’s desire. I am a minister by profession and by calling. I believe God has called me to this. I feel my soul purpose is to serve people and to encourage people. I know what it feels like to be down. I have been through a lot in my life. These are words of encouragement.”Find her on Facebook under ‘Minister Danica Burrows’ or purchase her work on iTunes under the name ‘U-Neek’.
