An art exhibit featuring work by Gilbert Institute students will go on display at the Bermuda Society of Arts on Friday. The ‘I am Creative’ exhibition will showcase the work of the primary 4 and primary 5 students who participated in a unique public school outreach programme called Art and Me.The programme was started in 2010 with a grant from the Bank of Bermuda Foundation. The students and art teachers worked together with art educators from Bermuda National Gallery, Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and the Bermuda Education Network.“The aim of this programme is to model and teach strategies for educators to use art in meaningful and comprehensive ways that increase student learning and enhance classroom teaching,” said Karolyn Lack, director of experimental learning at BEN.“Over the last two years students have studied the works of several Bermuda and international artists and have gained an appreciation and familiarity with the surrealist movement which you will see reflected in some of the works exhibited by the children.”By bringing the art coaches and classroom teachers together the educators were able to develop practical art lessons that encourage art appreciation, critical thinking and the exploration of works of art.Added BEN executive director Becky Ausenda: “When we first envisioned this collaboration our mission was twofold; we wanted to create a programme that would not only support the Cambridge Curriculum but also draw on new art teaching methodologies to help students build their skills in language, drawing, problem-solving and even their social and emotional literacy.“I am excited by not only the beautiful artwork that has come out of this programme, but also by the depth of thought that appears to have taken place with these students in the development of their pieces tangible proof that this programme is worthwhile.”The exhibit will run in the Edinburgh Gallery at BSoA through April 11.The gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and from 10-2pm on Saturdays. Admission is free.
