BMDS’ ‘God of Carnage’ premieres tonight

Yasmina’s Reza’s play ‘God of Carnage’ was judged a hit from the moment it landed in the hands of the Bermuda Musical & Dramatic.“Everyone immediately loved it,” said Jennifer Burrell-Jones. “The story leaped off the page and we just knew that it would appeal to a very diverse audience.”‘God of Carnage’ kicks off tonight at the Daylesford Theatre. It has been described politely as a “highly charged tag-team wrestling match”.The plot follows four combatants: married couples Alan and Annette and Veronica and Michael. Alan and Annette’s 11-year-old child has bashed Michael and Veronica’s son (who is no innocent) in the face with a stick, knocking out a tooth. Veronica has arranged a meeting of the parents to hash things out in a civilised manner.“It is set in one room in [one of the couple’s] home so therefore it made for a relatively simple set with no scene changes,” said Ms Burrell-Jones. “Also, a few names and settings within the dialogue have been changed to suit the Bermuda audience.“We saw it as a great opportunity for four very strong actors to let loose on stage. People with children will relate and those without will sympathise.”Ms Reza is an award-winning French playwright. She also wrote ‘Art’, a well-known that premiered in Paris in 1995.‘God of Carnage’ opened on Broadway in 2009, with all four actors involved nominated for Tony Awards. Actress Marcia Gay Harden actually received one. Most recently, the play has been adapted into a feature film called ‘Carnage’ with Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet.“The cast has been having a riot in rehearsals for a show which is going to have the audience laughing out loud,” said Ms Burland.‘God of Carnage’ is directed by Warwick Academy drama teacher, Chris Jones. The actors include: Robbie Godfrey, Lizzie Hadler, Alan Brookes and Laura Bardgett. The play runs through March 31 at 8pm at Daylesford Theatre. There are no performances on Sunday, March 25 or Monday, March 26.Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Daylesford from 7pm to 8pm on performance nights. Online bookings can be made at www.bmds.bm.
