High Tea socialites will raise their cups to Her Majesty

Cindy Swan, of Project Action, with guests at least year's High Tea to raise money for the charity.

If you missed donning your best hat and gloves for last year’s Project Action High Tea you have one last chance. To honour the 60th anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II Cindy Swan has organised their third High Tea social at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. The event will raise much needed funds for Project Action, a charity that provides transportation for senior citizens and the physically challenged in the community.“Last year’s High Tea was held to honour the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,” said Mrs Swan. “The first one we did was to honour the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. This is the last opportunity for people to be involved with our High Tea fundraiser. Next year we will be launching a book titled Bermuda Royal High Teas. It will be a tea table (yes, tea table) book which will include photos from our three High Teas, plus local high tea recipes from all sectors of the community, and also unique recipes for herbal tea combinations. We will be sending a copy to Buckingham Palace after it is printed to show her Majesty how all three important events were celebrated in Bermuda.”Participants are invited to dress to the nines with their best hats and gloves and morning suits for men.“About 85 percent of the people who come really dress up,” said Mrs Swan. “But we say it is not mandatory. Everyone comes out dressing so beautifully. I remember one year the Governor said it was the first time under one roof he had seen so many beautiful hats and dresses. ”Last year Mrs Swan wore a bright pink summer straw hat, linen white sun dress and a Spanish black appliqué bolero (a little jacket). The pink of the hat was meant to represent Bermuda. Since fashion is such a centre piece of the afternoon, one of this year’s highlights will be a fashion show called Belles Plumes Fleurs. This translates from the French into ‘beautiful full blossoms’. The fashion show will display clothing for the mature, elegant woman.“I wanted to call it Belles Plumes Fleurs because that is how I think of our senior citizens,” said Mrs Swan, “beautiful full blossoms.”“There will be some musical surprises,” said Mrs Swan. “I don’t want to give away the surprise though. Tony Robinson will be performing as well.”But she said the pretty hats and dresses aside, her main aim was to keep her charity rolling, literally. They give 1,200 rides to seniors and the physically challenged every year. Some of their riders need to be taken to doctors appointments or into town to pay bills, while others simply need a break from the tedium of being stuck at home all day.“Without our major sponsors, Rubis, we would not be able to be a functioning charity,” she said. “They donate our diesel. Validus Re, our major sponsor, has renewed their sponsorship for the next three years. With that there is still a shortfall. It takes $120,000 to run the service.Mrs Swan said they wouldn’t have the event anywhere but at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess because the hotel was famous for their English afternoon teas.“They are one of our sponsors and they do a fantastic job,” she said. “We have a cross section of the community that come out. We have royalists who support us and non-royalists.”High Tea will be held on June 9 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess at 3pm. Gold patron tickets are $500 for three tickets . Silver patron tickets are $250 for two tickets , bronze patrons are $100 and welcomed guests are $50. Silver and gold level tickets include special coronation memorabilia from The Royal Collection Trust. There is also a special ticket price of $30 for students. Tickets are available from www.bdatix.com and also Guilty Pleasures on the Upper Level of the Washington Mall in the City of Hamilton. For more information call 297-5044. Last year’s Jubilee High Tea was sold out, so to avoid disappointment, plan to get your tickets early.
