Whitney is my inspiration

Local singer Twanée Butterfield has just released her newest single and video called ‘Took Your Love’.(Photo by Christopher Daniel)

One might suspect that with a new song out like ‘Took Your Love’, singer Twanée Butterfield was referring to a man who had done her wrong. Instead, the local songstress said it was inspired by the loss of one of her biggest professional role models, and evolved from there into a catchy relationship anthem. She spoke to The Royal Gazette about the new tune, and said her hard work in the studio has been paying off in New York. Read on, to find out what the young talent has been up to in the Big Apple, and to hear what she says about the possibility of landing a record deal, or coming back to visit the Island.1. What inspired the new song?My initial inspiration to writing “Took Your Love” was when Whitney Houston passed. I found out while I was in my studio session, and I was so shaken up I couldn’t even finish the song I was originally writing. Whitney was the first artist I looked up to as a child. I was nearly obsessed with her, and studied all of her songs, and moves, while she was on stage, so I could learn to be as phenomenal as her. So her passing definitely had a toll on me.I started to write “Took Your Love” as “They took your love away..” not knowing what really happened at the time. After I finished writing, the song sounded really sad, and depressing, and I decided to change the words to come from a relationship perspective singing “She took your love away..”. I didn’t want everybody to feel down when they heard the record.2. Who did you work with on this one, and what was the recording process like? The entire song was written in about ten minutes. I was really in a zone. We took another ten minutes to record a reference track with intentions to recut the vocals later on. But when my producer, Ky Miller, and I, listened back to it we decided to keep the reference. The song was produced by Young Boyz Music.3. Why is this song special to you? It definitely sounds like something with the potential to make it to radio stations, here, the US and elsewhere. This song will always be special to me because it makes me think of Whitney. Her music will always live on in my heart, and it saddens me that I never got the chance to thank her for the inspiration she gave to me. She literally put the stars in my eyes.4. What has been the feedback so far on the song? Has it made it to radio stations anywhere that you know of?We really just thew out “Took Your Love” as a free download, and we didn’t intend on pushing it as hard as we would a single. But so far we’ve received such excellent feedback, we’re going to push it a bit more now. I just recently sent it to the radio stations in Bermuda as per request.5. Generally speaking, how are things going in your career?Things are going very well for me in my career. I am constantly working hard, and enjoying the ride, and I thank God for all the blessings I’ve received so far. You can stay tuned by following me on Twitter @MissTwanee. Also my website, www.twanee.com, has all my latest music, videos, and more.6. Are you any closer to getting a record deal?Honestly, with all the work we [my team and I] have put in, we may be in store for something even better than a record deal. Only time will tell.7. Do you have any plans to perform on the Island any time soon?I don’t have any immediate plans to perform on the Island, but I do hope to get back soon.
