Hard times inspire Kanaz Tuzo’s new song

In September, songwriter Kanaz Tuzo goes off to Manchester, England, to study music.

This new adventure is the result of years of writing music, and selling clothing at the Rubber Tree in Warwick to raise the money.

To inspire others, he has just released a new song, Life is What You Make It.

Lyrics include: “You’ve got to get in and depart from this world of sin/Remember the spirit of truth/I’m sure that you will win/Life is what you make it/Don’t let the wicked come and take it.”

“After going through various trials and traumas in my own life, I really wanted to encourage others,” Mr Tuzo said. “Years ago, I went to New England to study electronics. Things did not work out and I had to come back to Bermuda.”

When he returned home, he struggled to find his first permanent job.

“Instead of sitting around the house, not doing enough, I chose to keep myself active,” he said. “I exercised. I walked and went to the library to read. I would scan the newspaper for job advertisements.”

He did eventually find work at LF Wade International Airport as a ramp agent.

Things did not go smoothly at first.

“There were a few guys who were giving me some problems when I first started,” he said. “It was not easy, but I managed to keep my foot in the game.”

He turned to his religious faith to get him through the difficult period.

“The scriptures encouraged me,” he said.

His T-shirt business, 7771, offered merchandise with spiritual messages such as “Sun of righteousness”.

He has a passion for all aspects of music: playing, singing, writing and composing.

He has his own music studio set up in his home, but could not get the music to sound as good as he wanted on his own.

Life is What You Make It is his third release, but his first done professionally through music production company Just Platinum.

The song has a brassy, reggae beat, and is available with and without vocals.

Jimmy Furbert, Wentworth Woolridge, John Woolridge, John Johnston, Kent Hayward, and Tyler Jones provided instrumentals for the song, while Phiemma Caisey and Bethanne Thomas, of Sounds of Sweetness, provided backing vocals.

For Mr Tuzo, the hardest part of making the song was communicating how he wanted it to sound.

“I don’t know the music jargon,” he said. “I am still a beginner.”

He got some assistance from John Woolridge, and also turned to an unusual talent — his ability to mimic a trumpet, using only his mouth and lips.

On YouTube, Mr Tuzo calls himself Natural Mystic (The Trumpet), a reference to this talent.

“Sometimes I will be near people and will just be humming to myself,” he said. “When they hear me do the trumpet, they ask if I have a real instrument. I have to tell them it is only me.”

• Life is What You Make It can be found on YouTube under Natural Mystic, and can be streamed on most music platforms. CDs can be purchased at Sound Stage in the Washington Mall in Hamilton or at Music Box on Reid Street in Hamilton
