For years, DJ Rusty G had a vision of creating a carnival event where Bermudian artists weren't just part of the line-up, they were the main attraction.

This year, that vision becomes reality with the launch of U Lot, a new family-friendly event taking place on Front Street during Carnival in Bermuda.

The event will feature Fire Wayne & Friends backed by the internationally acclaimed Darien Bailey Band, creating what organisers say is the only live soca band experience of the carnival weekend.

“For about four or five years, I've wanted to see a show where a Bermudian was the headliner,” Rusty G said. “I always felt like we had artists making music that people genuinely know and love. You're not forcing a Bermudian agenda. This is what people want to hear.”

For Rusty G, Fire Wayne was the natural choice to lead the inaugural event.

“I feel like Wayne has finally built himself as an artist and is in the space to deliver on that vision.”

While carnival weekends are filled with DJs, fetes and parties, Rusty G believes there is something special about experiencing soca music with a live band.

“There's nothing like live music,” he said. “If you want to experience an artist at their best, it has to be with a band.”

To help bring that vision to life, U Lot has enlisted the Darien Bailey Band, widely regarded as one of the Caribbean's premier live soca bands.

But for Rusty G, the event is about more than simply adding another experience to an already packed carnival schedule.

“U Lot is the only live band experience during carnival week and the only place where you'll hear Bermuda's best soca artists perform with a band. It's also something for the entire family and we highly encourage bringing the kids to experience the show.”

The event's location was equally intentional. Set in a parking lot directly across from the Birdcage on Front Street, the venue ties directly into the concept behind the event's name.

Rusty G explains: “U Lot is a play on Bermudian slang. The idea was always a parking lot jam in the City of Hamilton. I had this vision of doing something in front of the Bermuda sign and this felt like the perfect place for it.”

Beyond the music, Rusty G hopes the event helps strengthen the connection between Bermuda Carnival and Bermudian culture. Having attended carnivals throughout the Caribbean, he believes local talent should have a prominent place within the celebration.

“I've seen how important events like these are to the heart and soul of carnivals in places like Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the Virgin Islands. In an action-packed weekend full of international talent and tourists on the island, I've always felt like an event that really showcases our talent was needed.”

That thinking is reflected in the event's all-ages format, with free admission for children under 13 and seniors over 65.

“I strongly believe that carnival culture should be a representation of its country and its people. This event is my way of trying to bridge that gap and connect those dots.”

Alongside Fire Wayne, the line-up will feature several of Bermuda's leading artists, including Working Title, Aalai, Photogenic and DJ Fury, with additional performers expected to be announced.

For Rusty G, the goal is simple: create a memorable experience while showcasing the strength of Bermuda's growing soca scene.

As for what success looks like after the final song ends?

“I hope people say they had an amazing time. I want to surprise people.”

U Lot takes place across from the Birdcage on Front street from 4pm to 9pm on Friday, June 12.
