Ralph Scott to play for Bermuda against touring US team
Ralph Scott will be the star attraction when the Bermuda Under-17 Select basketball squad face a touring team from New Jersey on Sunday.
The game against Radiant Sun is part of the five fixtures in the “Hooping in Paradise” Youth Basketball Showcase, with games taking place at The Berkeley Institute Gymnasium on Saturday and Sunday.
Bermuda Basketball Association Association secretary general Tim Trott expects 6ft 7in small forward Scott, who was voted MVP at the Basketball Without Borders Americas camp in El Salvador at the beginning of this month, to make a difference under coaches Gladstone Simons and Jorel Smith.
“Ralph Scott is going to be a big help especially when our under-17 team plays against Radiant Sun on Sunday,” Trott said.
“The under-17 team is made up of the same players who participated in the Cayman Classic last year, but this is the first time that they've actually come together as a group as we had a number of guys that were away in school.
“Obviously, they’re not going to be as together as they would have been if they were all here but everybody knows what the next person does.”
The matches start at 6.15pm on Saturday when the Under-17 Select team face their Development counterparts, a side under the mentorship of Damiso Husband and Te’Jour Riley. At 7.45pm, the Under-19 Select side, coached by Derrick Hendrickson and Shannon Thompson, clash with Radiant Sun.
On Sunday, matches start at 5.15pm with a young women’s select fixture between Pink Sand and Blue Ocean. Ralph Scott’s mother, Shanay Scott, and aunt Shari Scott are coaching the women’s teams alongside Lexi Rego.
The Under-17 Development side then take to the court against a Bermuda Youth Basketball Select at 6.15pm, before the Under-17 select squad bring the curtain down on the action against Radiant Sun at 7.45pm.
The US team, who arrive in Bermuda on Thursday, are expected to carry out community outreach initiatives on the island.
“Radiant Sun are big on community work, they’re not just about basketball,” Trott said.
“I don't know much about their team. Normally they would have brought a full squad of 12, but I think they’re only bringing nine which is still fine.”
