Seven local coaches recently passed the International Basketball Federation World Association of Basketball Coaches Level 1 coaching course.

Damiso Husband, Tommy Johnson, Vernon Lambe, Jason Lowe, Joshua Nesbitt, Eric Rowse and Gladstone Simons were under the mentorship of top instructor Nelson Isley.

According to the Bermuda Basketball Association, the course, which was held over six days at Somersfield Academy and Bermuda College, consisted of comprehensive training designed to enhance coaching knowledge, individual team basketball concepts and practical teaching ability for aspiring FIBA WABC Level 1 coaches.

Tim Trott, the BBA secretary general, indicated that they were aiming to make it mandatory for every single coach to be certified before they conduct any coaching.

“We hope one day to get to the level of Bermuda Football Association where all youth head coaches need a Fifa certification to coach youth football,” he said.

“This would include middle school and high school and eventually primary schools. The goal is to increase the level of basketball in Bermuda and it starts with coaching.”

Meanwhile, action continued in the Bermuda Youth Basketball League at Mount Saint Agnes Academy Gymnasium on Saturday.

In the first match of the day, Cobras, who are on top of the table, defeated Mambas 37-28. The second encounter saw Piranhas record their first win of the season with a 58-45 triumph over Bulldogs.

Husband, the BBA youth director, is pleased with the commitment shown by the up-and-coming talent so far this season.

“We only have four teams this year because we wanted better-quality play,” he said.

“Player attendance has been better, which results in more competitive and entertaining games.

“It’s always good to see new faces and new energy each year. This league represents what community sport is all about — opportunity.

“Every week, our young athletes get to compete, learn and challenge themselves in an environment built to help them succeed.

“We’re committed to investing in their futures and creating pathways for Bermuda’s next generation of basketball talent.”
