Talk focusing on a claims professional’s day

Tawana Tannock: Seminar speaker

Those interested in pursuing a career in insurance may want to attend a seminar next week on one particular aspect of the business.

Tawana Tannock, the vice-president of claims and compliance at Bowring Marsh, will host a two-hour seminar titled ‘Day in the Life of a Claims Professional’ at the Bermuda Insurance Institute on March 16.

She will speak about the benefits and realities of a career in claims and discuss the life cycle of a claim from the initial notice to monitoring, negotiation and settlement. Ms Tannock will explain the role of a broker claims advocate in this process and touch upon claim trends in 2016.

In her role at Bowring Marsh, Ms Tannock provides insurance coverage analysis and claims advice to brokers and clients, assisting them with complex coverage and claims issues.

Bowring Marsh is a wholly owned subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies, and is the only brokerage firm in Bermuda that has claims advocates on island to assist clients with claim management and resolution.

“Claims management within a brokerage firm is unique and this seminar offers a different perspective than one would experience handling claims with an insurer,” said Ms Tannock.

“This is my third year presenting on this topic and having made a career change myself, I hope to inspire others who are interested in learning about the benefits of a career in claims.”

Chris Reeves, president and chief operating officer, Bowring Marsh, said: “If you are starting out your career or interested in making a change, I encourage you to sign up for this presentation.

“Tawana does a great job explaining what it means to work as a claims professional. In researching careers, it is always best to hear it directly from those who live it every day.”

Prior to joining Bowring Marsh, Ms Tannock was an attorney with the Ministry of Justice. She currently serves as chairperson of the Bermuda Human Rights Commission, sits on the professional conduct and CLE committees of the Bermuda Bar Association, is co-chairperson of Marsh Bermuda Women’s Exchange and is an executive officer of the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance Bermuda.

The seminar on March 16 will take place between at 12pm and 2pm and is open to anyone interested in learning more about or pursuing this career path.

The presentation is part of a larger series of seminars organised by the BII to increase the public’s knowledge of the insurance and reinsurance industry. The cost for this seminar is $100 and includes lunch. To register, visit www.bii.bm and sign up for course 161SEM0316.
