Teresa Perozzi and Tori Nelson could face off in a unification world middleweight championship fight on local soil later this year. Both fighters’ camps have already held preliminary discussions which could culminate in Bermuda hosting a unifying WBA and WBC world middleweight championship fight sometime between August and October.“I got a call about an offer in Virginia against Tori Nelson the girl I want to fight,” Perozzi said. “But I want that fight here and I’m hoping for enough money she would want to come here.”As her own manager, Perozzi reserves the right to fight wherever and whoever she chooses to.This means she could opt to face another WBA contender before taking on Nelson, providing she doesn’t part company with her belt.Perozzi improved her pro record to 9-4-1 with a unanimous points decision over American April Ward during Saturday’s Teachers Rugby Fight Night XIV at Berkeley Institute. The mother-of-one was brimming with confidence heading into the first defence of her championship belt and it showed in the ring as she conjured up a real treat for local fight fans.“I already knew I was going to win. I know it sounds corny but I knew it was my destiny,” she said. The massage therapist singled out coach Jermal Woodly for praise. The San Shou fighter suffered a first loss at Fight Night in the bout immediately preceding Perozzi’s title defence.“None of us expected him to lose and I probably would’ve been devasted,” Perozzi said.”He was upset for about ten minutes and then he got it together and said ‘all right, we’re here to do a job so let’s do it’.“For him to come back and take care of me and be all about me . . . that really meant a lot to me. He is genuine and has been like that the whole way.”Perozzi whipped the crowd into a frenzy as she was escorted to the ring by the Gombeys.“That was the best part of the night, it was better than the win to be honest,” she said.“The Gombeys made me very proud and it was great to be Bermudian that night.“Coming out to that crowd was huge for me, the electricity and feeling there was like wow! It was so intimate and positive I came out relaxed and happy and couldn’t stop smiling.“The people there were so genuine and I had so many people pulling for me, they had a whole Perozzi section and it was amazing.”Video clips of Perozzi’s win over Ward have already had more than 30,000 hits on the internet.Bermuda has also received positive feedback from the WBA for staging a highly successful world championship fight.“In the WBA’s eyes this was huge,” Perozzi said.“This is going to be all over the boxing world and hopefully it helps to revive the sport here because we do have talent.”
