Bascome ready for ring return

Packing a punch: Bascome has been lined up to headline Teachers Rugby Fight Night in April

The search for Nikki Bascome’s next opponent continues.

The 24-year old welterweight has not fought since chalking up his second straight victory as a professional in as many outings against Canadian Joe Marchand-Tipping on the undercard of Teresa Perozzi’s IBA world middleweight title fight at The Fairmont Southampton Hotel last November.

Bascome’s trainer, Allan “Forty” Rego, is presently overseas scouting potential opponents for his boxer to face.

“I am out here in Orlando, Florida looking for fighters for Nikki,” he said.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that promoters of the Teacher’s Rugby Fight Night are keen to have Bascome headline their April 18 event at Berkeley School Gymnasium. The potential fight could see Bascome step into the ring in a four-round bout.

“We are still working on that and there is nobody confirmed yet,” an event spokesperson said.

“We are still looking for somebody. The undercard is coming along very well. We will have Nikki on top if we can find somebody, if not then we won’t.”

Bascome was in impressive form when he fought Marchand-Tipping, who is primarily a muay thai fighter, in his first professional fight on home soil.

He took early control of the bout and never looked uncomfortable, dropping his opponent to the canvas in the first and fourth rounds en route to an unanimous points victory.

“This was something that I have dreamed about for a long time,” an elated Bascome said after the fight.

“I prepared for this and I’m just glad things worked out how I wanted them to.”

Bascome recorded an inspiring points victory against George Quintero nearly a year ago in Florida on his professional debut.

Before turning professional, Bascome won several honours competing in the junior middleweight division, including the Dynamic Fighting Championship, the Platinum Gloves Tournament and the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic.
