Andre Lambe has eyes on future prizes after biggest career win
Andre Lambe could be the star attraction at Harbour Nights on Wednesday as he returns to the island with another belt.
The Bermudian boxer, who is now the proud owner of the ABO welterweight title after a unanimous points decision over Kenzo Casteneda in Texas on Saturday night, will head straight from the airport to Front Street with pen in hand to sign sports cards and merchandise for his many fans.
Less than 24 hours after his victory Lambe is recovering from his first eight-round bout but his in-ring dominance was such that he is not returning with many cuts and bruises.
“I guess on TV it didn’t look like I took too much, but there were a few punches that made a mark,” Lambe said.
“But I feel great and a few people have asked me to do some signings at Harbour Nights so I might head straight there after leaving the airport as long as my flights are on time."
Lambe outclassed his aggressive opponent, who switched his stance a number of times during the fight in an attempt to wrestle back momentum.
“We knew that he switched but the fact he switched and stayed that way for a while means he was trying to figure out a way in,” Lambe said.
“Some of his game plan we went and did back to him because he really wanted to fight on the inside. At some points I traded with him and showed him that I could do what he could do just as well.
“The last two rounds were actually better than some of my middle rounds as I felt like I took a little while to start getting my second wind.”
Lambe dropped to his knees after his hand was raised in victory in the centre of the ring and despite winning the belt, it was a success against a worthy opponent that pleased him the most.
“I’m just happy to have been able to get over the hurdle of the person that I fought,” Lambe said.
“It isn’t so much the belt, although I am appreciative of the ABO for giving me this opportunity, but it’s more about the opponent.
“If people go back and research who he was, the only guys he has lost to are Olympian fighters and undefeated prospects. He’s got a lot of experience, 21 wins, was an IBF champion and has had a few belts himself so to be able to beat someone like that is great.
“I also still feel that I can do better than I did and feel like I have a lot of potential left to unlock, but to do what I did should be testament to itself.”
There were plenty of promoters at ringside and Lambe’s style is sure to have caught the eye of some influential industry insiders.
“A lot of people expressed to me after how impressed they were with the fight,” Lambe said.
“There were a lot of mixed predictions before the race about who was going to win but for them to see how it unfolded and give me credit for how I fought was pleasing. Hopefully something else will come up soon and we can get on an even bigger card.
“I have a few offers right now so me and my team need to sit down and talk about what we want to do. I’m trying to keep active this year and this was my first eight-rounder against a tough opponent. We’ll see what comes and it might not be another tough fight next but we have to work on some negotiations to get in another big fight and that takes time.”
After launching himself into the next phase of his career, Lambe could have been forgiven for some wild celebrations but he settled for a trip to a fast-food restaurant and a sleep with his belts.
“El Tigre Promotions had an after-party at one of the bars here in Texas with a live band,” Lambe said.
“But then I went to Whataburger, I’m not sure if anybody knows about it but I just had a fried chicken sandwich. I was completely exhausted and just wanted to go home and sleep.”
