Fighters from the Caribbean and Canada rolled into town this week hoping to hand out some beatings to Bermuda’s local heroes.

At Dockyard tonight, the Epic Entertainnment Fight Night card will feature nine fights, with teenager Sadie Woodstra fighting the island’s Muryah Swan in a kickboxing contest to start the evening at 8pm.

Woodstra is enjoying her time in Bermuda but is not allowing the island’s beauty to take too much of her focus.

“This is the coolest place I’ve ever been. When we got down here it was a long drive to our house and it was the nicest place ever. In the future I’d love to come back but it’s hot.

“My opponent is definitely going to have the advantage when it comes to the heat as it’s an outdoor ring. I’m definitely glad it’s going to be at 8pm and I’m really excited for the fight.”

Swan, her opponent, won a sports scholarship award from the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation last week and is hoping to show that the grant has gone to a worthy recipient with a good performance in front of her home crowd.

“I’m feeling good, really confident and I’ve been training hard,” she said. “I’ve cleaned up my diet and I’m ready to go.

“My parents are coming to the show and I still haven’t figured out who I’m going to give my other two tickets to but I’m getting a lot of support. When I’m at school my teachers and friends are hyping me up and resharing my stories.”

Michael Roldan is taking on Cole Durham at middleweight and has no fears about not having any supporters at ringside come the big night,

“I rarely fight locally and I’ve always fought somewhere in other countries and sometimes those boos motivate me and make me fight a bit harder,” Roldan said.

“It doesn’t get under my skin and I don’t take anything personally. Those guys are just cheering on the home guy and honestly I’m just hoping to put on a good show for the people of Bermuda.”

Roldan has a martial arts background and Durham could be in for a tough night if he boxes as well as he talks.

“I’m fast with a lot of power,” Roldan said. “I’m more of a Muay Thai/boxing hybrid. I like to use my hands, footwork and a bit of head movement and I’m looking forward to surprising the crowd on Saturday.

Daniel Bacchus will be taking on Bermudian Jashun Thomas and is promising fireworks.

“I expect fireworks, it’s going to be a fun and exciting time and I am going to be throwing a lot of hands and a lot of kicks,” Bacchus said.

“You can expect a little bit of smash mouth, a lit bit of technical. I like to move forward, throw hands and finish with my kicks.”
