Boxer Tyler Christopher’s star on the rise

Tyler Christopher is dreaming big after extending his impeccable record to 11-0 over the weekend.

The English-based super-welterweight boxer defeated Jensen Irving by unanimous decision in Birmingham on Sunday to remain undefeated and he believes that his record is starting to make him attractive to promoters, with the chance to advertise himself on a bigger stage with a televised fight among his ambitions.

“I’m looking for big TV appearance fights,” the 29-year-old told The Royal Gazette.

“If it’s a title fight, then I'll fight for a British title, but as for English and Midlands titles, that's not really on my radar. But TV appearances are definitely what I'm looking forward to.

“With a record like 11-0, that says something, so a TV promoter would be looking to put me on one of his bills because I believe I’m an attraction.

“It’s a good look for a promoter to put me up against one of his fighters. They look for guys with my record to test their fighters, so that’s what I’m anticipating, a televised appearance against someone who is signed to a promoter.

“I was born to be televised as it suits my personality. It puts me in front of bigger audiences and I know I have the quality to fight on TV and stay on TV. When I get that chance I won’t let it go.”

Christopher was pleased with the way his latest bout panned out, despite his opponent coming into the fight overweight and the contest being switched to middleweight.

“It feels like a great accomplishment, having come to Birmingham in 2019 and now I'm 11-0,” he said.

“The fight on Sunday was very easily handled. I dictated with my jab and there wasn’t much that he had to offer me. He hit me with two good shots, but other than that I handled the opponent very easily.

“I’m super-welterweight, but because the fight’s not a title fight, you’re allowed to come in overweight. My opponent fights at a higher weight, so they allowed us to fight at middleweight.”

The southpaw was grateful to have a handful of Bermudians backing him in what was his second fight of the year.

“I have to sell my own tickets to pay for my opponent,” Christopher said.

“The promoter gets a cut and then I get what is left. There’s only been one fight where I haven’t had to sell tickets and that was in March when I fought against Jordan Grannum.

“Other than that, every fight I’ve had to sell tickets. I had about 30 Bermudians on Sunday and they were rooting for me.

“Having the support of the Bermudians was good and one day I hope to have a live stream for Bermudians to watch my fights back home.

“I’ve been working with Anthony Hull as my coach and Jon Pegg as manager since 2019 when I moved to England. I spent a whole year training throughout Covid-19, working on my skills with my coach, then I had my debut in October 2021.

“I would like to give thanks to my sponsors, Woi Bermuda, Flower Wall, Tikur Organic Farm and Mellow’s Catering in Birmingham. Without their support I wouldn't have had my eleventh fight.”

Christopher is open to fighting in Bermuda, something he has left to the promoters on the island to make it happen.

“I always wanted to fight at home, but no organisers have reached out to me as of yet,” the boxer said. “I’ve been hoping for years but no one's ever reached out to me.”
