Adrian Roach puts unbeaten record on the line in Texas
Bermudian boxer Adrian Roach will put his perfect professional record on the line when he steps back into the ring against American Pedro Ibarra Jr in Conroe, Texas, on Saturday (7.30pm Bermuda time).
Roach (3-0) takes on Ibarra (0-2), in a four-round welterweight contest as part of the El Tigre Fight Night at The Lone Star Convention & Expo Centre.
Having spent months preparing for the bout, Roach, who knocked out American Brandon Mendez the last time he took to the ring in August, declared that he was in great shape.
“I’m feeling really good ahead of the fight,” Roach told The Royal Gazette.
“Leo Richardson, Pelon Andrade and Nikki Bascome played a huge role in making sure that I’m well prepared for the fight.
“I’m happy with how things are going so far and I’m just looking forward to putting on a shift.
“Truthfully, I got right back into training camp as soon as I got out of that last fight. Just because it was so early of a finish, I felt like I hadn’t worked too much, so we just hopped right back in training.
“We knew from June when we came out with Andre Lambe and I was supposed to fight and the guy pulled out. We knew that I was coming back in November.”
While his 29-year-old opponent is yet to register a victory, the Bermudian is not sure what to expect from the Texan.
“He’s a journeyman but you never know in boxing, one punch can change a fight,” Roach said.
“Contrary to what people most likely think, I actually expect him to have nothing to lose. He’s going to come at me with everything he has, so I’m definitely prepared for that.”
Two of Roach’s three wins have been delivered by knockout, something he is looking to achieve again in Texas.
“I always go in looking for the knockout but I’m not going to force it,” the 24-year-old said.
“If it comes, it comes. The main thing is getting the win and putting on a good performance.”
In their hype for Roach’s fight, El Tigre Promotions touted the Bermudian as heading to Texas to show he means business against a resilient opponent.
“Bermuda’s undefeated prospect, Adrian Roach, is ready to make a statement as he makes his arrival in the welterweight division,” the promoters said.
“But standing across the ring is a tough Texan with other plans. Pedro Ibarra Jr is coming to spoil the party, derail Roach’s momentum and prove that this division won’t hand out any welcome gifts.
“Roach brings an undefeated record and ambition. Ibarra brings Texas toughness and the determination to ruin his big arrival.”
Roach thanked his sponsors for making it possible for him to continue fighting. He also urged Bermudians to tune into the channel that will be streaming his fight.
“A big shout out to all my sponsors that came through really big in this fight,” he added.
“We have Manders Trucking Service, True Charters, TNT Athletics, Championship Finish, Controversy Boxing Gym and Fresh & Hungry Boxing Gym.
“Bermudians can catch me live on the El Tigre Promotions YouTube channel. Their support means a lot to me.”
