Burch: ‘We have all been asked to reduce spending’
National Security Minister David Burch said the police service would feel the pinch of financial cuts in Friday’s budget. However, he told the Senate yesterday that if unexpected challenges arose, he would request more funds for the service.“If there is a bump in the road, I will go across the hall and ask for more money and like last year the money will be provided,” he said.“They have to feel the pinch like everyone else.”Discussing media reports that the service would face budget cuts of $16 million, the Minister told the Senate that he could not comment in detail until the budget is released on Friday, but said: “We have all been asked to reduce spending.“Everybody has demanded that we must cut the budget. I’m not a psychic, but you watch on Friday and I know we will hear everybody saying, ‘I wanted you to cut the budget, but not my programmes’. You cannot have it both ways.”He also commented on suggestions that the Government needed to run the country like a business, saying: “You cannot run Government like a business. You cannot handle your people like they are profits or deficits. Everybody has demanded that we cut spending. That means we have to cut one of two P’s: projects or people.”Useful Websites: www.gov.bm, www.police.bm.
