Corporations lose right to collect wharfage fees but get grants

Hamilton Docks: Government will now share revenue with the Corporations of Hamilton and St George's from wharfage.

As expected when the new Muncipalities Act was passed last year, the Corporations of Hamilton and St. George’s have lost their right to directly collect wharfage fees from ships using their docks. But most of the projected $6.215 million that they would have collected will now come to them in the form of a grant, at least for this year. The Corporation of Hailton will receive a $5 million grant, while the Corporation of St George’s will see its grant increased to $1.15 million from $350,000, leaving Government with a windfall of about $455,000.The Muncipalities Act took away from the Corporations the right to collect the fees, but Premier Paula Cox delayed the transfer whe nshe took office. Now it will start on April 1.The $5 million grant will be less than the Corporation of Hamilton was hoping for.In December, Mayor Charles Gosling said he thought wharfage fees would bring in about $6 million, about 16 percent lower than in previous years, but still about one third of the city’s budget. However, Government is also expected to start paying $660,000 for the fire station on King Street in the coming fiscal year. The mayors of both corporations remained declined to comment yesterday.Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling said the Corporation planned to issue a statement on Sunday, and St George’s Mayor Kenneth Bascome said he wouldn’t make any statement before meeting with Derrick Burgess, the Minister responsible for municipalities.
