Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy said Government did reach out to unions before eliminating term limits. In a statement yesterday, Senator Fahy said the Ministry sought feedback via the Bermuda Trade Union Congress (BTUC), whose representatives were appointed to the Work Permit Stakeholder Group. The Ministry released an e-mail, written by Permanent Secretary Cherie Whitter and dated January 23.The email requested the recipients review an attached report which explored the possibility of ending the term limit policy, and respond with their views by January 28.Bermuda Industrial Union President Chris Furbert, Bermuda Public Service Union representative Anthony Wolffe and former BTUC head Wendall (Shine) Hayward were all listed as recipients.Sen Fahy said: “With respect to recent claims by the unions as it relates to consultation, the public should know that Mr Furbert of the BIU and Mr Wolffe, a BPSU representative, both represent the BTUC on the Work Permit Stakeholder Group.”He also stated that Mr Hayward was still listed as BTUC President on Ministry records.“Members of the public and the media will note that both BTUC representatives as well as the President received a copy of the document,” Sen Fahy said.“And the Ministry can confirm, that the BTUC is the only group that did not respond.”New BTUC President Alan Wilkinson, who assumed leadership of the group last month, on Friday criticised a lack of consultation with the unions before the policy change was announced on Wednesday.
