Cash set aside to fund emergency-service equipment

Big boost: the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service will receive four new fire trucks (File photograph)

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service will get four new fire trucks this year to be based at LF Wade International Airport.

Emergency service staffing levels are also expected to get a boost, with extra funding set aside to fill vacant posts in the police, customs, corrections and fire services.

The new fire trucks will be paid for out of the Ministry of National Security’s allocated $137.8 million budget for the year.

David Burt, the Premier, made the announcement when delivering his Budget statement in the House of Assembly.

Mr Burt said that this year’s funding for the ministry is an increase of $6.4 million on the ministry’s funding for last year, although the bulk of the extra revenue is swallowed up by salary increases.

According to the Premier, revenue will fund the implementation of a uniformed services training programme “to improve Bermudian readiness for the uniformed services”.

Cybersecurity will be strengthened with several new posts, and a disaster co-ordinator will be hired to head the Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation team.

Security at Westgate Correctional Facility will be ramped up with the installation of a full-body scanner.
