BAMZ in line for $1.75m infrastructure investment
One of Bermuda’s best-loved family attractions is set to get a big facelift with the help of a government Budget commitment.
The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo in Hamilton Parish is to receive $1,750,000 from the Ministry of Public Works and Environment as part of the plan.
Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, touched on the allocation during the Budget debate in Parliament this morning, saying the funds would go towards “the implementation of the master plan 2025 to 2038 to improve and transform the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo”.
The project is listed in the Budget Book as BAMZ Master Plan Infrastructure.
The capital budget for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which falls under the ministry, has an active capital account focused on minor works including $100,000 for the facility.
Mr Adams added: “Due to the need for specialised facilities and educational displays, $100,000 has been allocated to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo for repairs to exhibits and life-support systems.
“This includes minor repairs to ensure the continued operation of the zoo and aquarium.”
Last month, BAMZ earned official accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ independent Accreditation Commission, which is considered the “gold standard” in zoological and aquarium accreditation.
BAMZ will enjoy the status for five years before reaccreditation.
The mission of the institution is to “inspire appreciation and care of island environments”, which it says it fulfils through “animal habitat exhibits … as well as related environmental education, conservation projects and research programmes”.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been approached for further details on the master plan.
