Privacy guide: the new book to help follow the Pipa (Photograph supplied)

A new book about Bermuda’s data privacy law aims to help businesses and individuals to comply with it and understand it.The Pipa — a Practical Guide to the Personal Information Protection Act 2016 is sponsored by Gateway Systems Ltd, which information security services and privacy consulting. John Kyle, managing director of Gateway Systems, said: “While working with our clients we would spend time providing background information about privacy and the Pipa in general, so we felt it would be helpful to provide an informative guide about both and make it available to the public as well.”Written by a team of privacy experts, the book addresses the rights of individuals, the duties placed on organisations and gives examples. An accompanying website, www.the-pipa.com, details the contents of the book and will include updates about privacy. The team that assisted in the creation of the book and website is called QuisSumus. They include Mr Kyle, Nancy Volesky, a past director of the Department of E-Commerce, now a privacy and cybersecurity consultant at Gateway; and Michael Harding a sales and privacy consultant at Gateway. Also contributing from overseas were Nigel Hickson, a former British civil servant who worked in Bermuda as an adviser to the Minister for Telecommunications and E-Commerce from 2001 to 2004, who began the process that resulted in the drafting of the Pipa; Christopher Meyer is an accountant who worked as a comptroller for the Bermuda Government; and Graham Wood a privacy consultant based in Britain.
