Bermudian students will benefit from almost 100 paid internships provided by member companies of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers this summer.

The association’s 2025 summer internship programme was launched this week at O’Hara House with a reception attended by 160 people, including many of the interns, as well as leaders from Bermuda’s insurance and reinsurance community.

Encouragement came from the attendance of a long list of officials including the Governor and the Premier.

Mark Cloutier, the chair of Abir and executive chairman of Aspen Insurance Group, said the interns were gaining meaningful exposure to the dynamic, global insurance and reinsurance industry.

He said: “These internships not only introduce students to the many career paths available but also strengthen the connections between our industry and the next generation of local talent.

“This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to foster a diverse and inclusive workforce in Bermuda.”

Abir welcomed the “exceptional talent base” in Bermuda as a competitive edge. Bermudians, spouses of Bermudians and permanent residency certificate holders make up about 70 per cent of Abir’s member companies’ workforce.

John Huff, the CEO of Abir said: “The island’s largest private-sector summer internship programme is one of the ways we continue to try to attract future Bermudian leaders.”

Abir member companies contributed more than $1 billion to Bermuda’s economy in 2023 and employed 2,140 people.

The associated members are expected to be the largest payers of Bermuda’s corporate income tax, which came into effect this year.

The interns will spend the summer months working with Abir companies and will also benefit from professional development, networking and industry learning opportunities through events and initiatives organised by Abir and past interns who now work in full-time roles with Abir member companies.

This year’s programme includes a hands-on interactive workshop designed to help interns prepare for and excel in job interviews; social-media coaching with a focus on creating and optimising a compelling LinkedIn profile with an appropriate photograph; a session on claims; and career roundtables featuring young professionals in a cross-section of roles.

There are volunteer opportunities at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.

Abir members with 2025 summer interns include: AIG, Aeolus, Aon, Arch Capital, Argo, Ariel Re, Ascot, Aspen, Chubb, Conduit Re, Convex, Everest, Fidelis, Fortitude Re, Hamilton, Hannover Re, Hiscox, Marsh, Mosaic, PartnerRe, RenaissanceRe, SiriusPoint and Sompo.
