Burt committed to road safety
The Government is committed to an improvement in road safety, the Premier said yesterday.
David Burt said: “The commitment from this government to address this issue is, without question, profound.
“We all have families who have been affected by those specific challenges and that drives our commitment to the issue.”
Mr Burt was speaking at a Cabinet Office press conference on last Friday's Budget.
He repeated his commitment to roadside breath tests “this year” but said it was doubtful speed cameras could be introduced in the same timeframe.
Mr Burt said: “The Deputy Premier [transport minister Walter Roban] will be able to speak more in depth on that on Thursday. It is dealing with his particular ministry, so he will be able to go more in depth on the issue.
“What I will say is that we are committed. I know that he and the Ministry of National Security [Wayne Caines] are working together to introduce roadside sobriety testing this year, making sure that it is random, but we will be sure to introduce it.
“The other measures he can go into more detail with. However, I am relatively certain that we are not funding speed cameras in this Budget.”
The Royal Gazette's Drive for Change campaign has called for non-selective roadside breath testing, speed cameras and a graduated licensing programme, including an on-road component for new road users.
