The Drive for Change road safety campaign is to highlight the problem of impaired driving at an event at City Hall tomorrow

The Royal Gazette campaign was launched to promote road safety including speeding and roads training but is to dedicate this month to drug and drink-driving.

The event will be introduced by City of Hamilton mayor Charles Gosling.

There will be speeches from road safety experts, including Inspector Robert Cardwell, head of the police roads policing unit.

Dennis Lister III, chairman of the Bermuda Road Safety Council, and drink-driving counsellor Fiona Elkinson will also speak.

Drive for Change partner and road safety group A Piece of the Rock, emergency medical technicians and representatives from counselling and transport services will also be represented.

At least 75 per cent of road fatalities involve alcohol or drugs and 118 people have died in traffic incidents in the past decade.

The Government said it was committed to introducing roadside sobriety testing this year — a move backed by Drive for Change.

The event, postponed last week because of bad weather, will take place outside City Hall tomorrow from noon to 2pm.
