Man who called police ‘monkeys’ fined $2,500
A 22-year-old Pembroke man who unleashed a torrent of racist abuse towards police after he was stopped on suspicion of drink-driving was fined $2,500 yesterday.
Kevin Pacheco, 22, was also banned for a year and fined $800 for failing to take a breath test.
Pacheco, from Pembroke, admitted in Magistrates’ Court that he told officers, when he was questioned after his bike was in collision with a car in Devonshire on December 13 last year: “You are f**king monkeys. You need to get back to your own country.”
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told Pacheco his conduct was “totally unwarranted” and was racial harassment, which had a maximum penalty of a $5,000 fine or a year in prison.
Pacheco told Mr Tokunbo: “I’m sorry to the courts and, I assure you, you won’t be seeing me again.”
