Prosecutors have lodged an appeal to seek a longer prison sentence for a sex offender.Chez Rogers, 20, was jailed on July 15 after he admitted he had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl and lured her. The offences took place between August 1 and October 1 last year.The Crown is expected to submit their arguments to the Court of Appeal early next month.The Supreme Court earlier heard Rogers, from St George’s, was caught after the victim’s mother discovered a series of sexual messages between her daughter and the defendant, who was aged 19 at the time.Rogers admitted to police that he had communicated with the girl on social media and that they had sex on two occasions last year.Prosecutors in the Supreme Court had called for a sentence of between three and four years.But Charles Richardson, who appeared for Rogers, argued a sentence between eight and 18 months would be appropriate.Mr Richardson also made a series of controversial comments during the sentencing hearing.He said that his client accepted full responsibility for his actions.But he told the court that there was a phenomenon of “young women” who tried to have sex with older men “for sport” and suggested that child victims should be held partly responsible.The comments sparked fury from child protection charities and the sentencing judge, Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons.Mrs Justice Simmons found on that the appropriate starting point for the sentence was two years, but that Rogers deserved a discount for an early guilty plea and his previous good character.She sentenced Rogers to 18 months for unlawful carnal knowledge and 12 months for luring, but ordered the sentences to run concurrently.• It is The Royal Gazette’s policy not to allow comments on stories regarding court cases.
